ENCAUSTIC ART CARE Encaustic Paintings are the most archival of fine art paintings created by the Egyptians. The beeswax and damar resin, which is a natural hardener, are impervious to moisture, making them highly archival; they will not yellow or darken, and the color of the work is preserved within the wax layers as well and is completely resistant to fading. Do not frame encaustics under glass; you will lose the wax's beauty and how the light plays with the painting. You should handle encaustic paintings with care to avoid scratching or damaging the surface, it's recommended to use a white glove when handling them. If the painting becomes scratched, you can buff the surface gently with the glove to restore it to its original condition. Encaustic paintings should be kept at stable temperatures between 40-125 degrees F, and it's important not to expose them to extreme temperatures, or in direct sunlight. During the first year, the wax may cause a "bloom," which is a hazy white residue that can be easily removed by gently wiping the surface with a soft cloth. This does not always happen, but it's still a good practice to wipe the surface at least once every quarter to maintain the painting's beauty.
