This painting depicts two native Hawaiiian geese near one of their major food sources, ohelo berry bushes. Long ago there were at least 5 types of goose endemic to the Hawaiian islands. The nene is the last species of goose left, and you can still see them in some of the state and national parks systems. My favorite element of their markings are the beautiful stripes on their necks.
