Naio/Resin Seascape surfboard

This unique mixed media resin art surfboard is an ocean themed and created as a collaboration between Kalai Koa Woods owner/artist Greg Eaves and his wife, both born and raised in Hawaii. The Naio wood accent is from the mountains of the Big Island of Hawaii. Naio wood is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and has a slight yellowish color. The Seashells and coarse sand inclusions come from Secret Beach on the island of Kauai with occasional finds from beaches on Oahu, all collected by the artists. The custom shaped mold and Naio wood accents are shaped by hand by Greg and the epoxy art is created by his wife. This surfboard is inspired by the modern swallow tail surfboard shape with a pointed tip and double point tail. The piece is unique in its variations of colors, ocean wave and current patterns. The epoxy consists of at least four layers, each containing various pigments, some with acrylic painted features. Each epoxy layer is cured for about 24 hours. The surfaces are lightly sanded before the next layer is applied. After the final layer, the piece is removed from the mold, sanded and shaped by hand. A coat of tabletop epoxy is then applied which gives each piece a glossy finish. Drips of epoxy rim the board, looking like water dripping off the edges. These drip accents reflect the light and support the surfboards when placed on a table top or off the wall when hung by the attached clear acrylic keyhole hanger.
