This piece, painted on traditional Hawaiian kapa handmade by my sister, explores the interconnectedness of time, ancestry, and creation. At its base lies a sea of dog-eye motifs, symbolizing transitions and transformation. Triangle symbols ascend the edges, representing lineage and the continuity of our ancestors. In the center, a hula dancer creates ripples of energy, gesturing from her noeʻau (gut) as a symbol of creation and the transfer of knowledge. Flanking her are Fibonacci moon cycles embodying perfect harmony in the continuation of time. Her hair extends as a mountain range across the top, grounding the woman to the strength of the natural world. Painted in a single blue hue, the piece recalls the timelessness of ancestral art and honors my mother, now an uhane, a family spirit guide across realms. Makua Hina being a poetic play on the concept of mother hood and the moon goddess and weaver of time Hina. Keywords: hawaiian, kapa, ancestral art
