Kalakaua 'Umeke - Milo

In this one-piece creation, the 'umeke is given rise by a smooth, tall pedestal to a place of honor and prestige, reminiscent of the way King Kalākaua showcased the finest objects in his collection. Turned from regal Milo wood, the gently curved shape of the 'umeke shows off the dark reddish brown hues of the heartwood and golden highlights of the sapwood. This combination of form, function, and ceremonial display evokes the importance of both the ‘umeke as a cultural symbol and stands as a testament to Hawai'i's artistic heritage.
