This multi-sensory art piece is inspired by Hawaii’s unique and beautiful custom of celebrating our recent graduates by burying them with lei. A variety of 3 dimensional, colorful Hawaiian flower leis are draped over a simple, white, textured canvas reminiscent of how we might drape our lei over the back of a chair after a special celebration. It evokes memories of my own Punahou graduation at the Blaisdell Center or my children’s at the Stan Sheriff Center and the unique Class of ‘21 graduation at Alexander Field.
Each flower is made from heavy acrylic paint and assembled piece-by-piece much like real lei.
