"From the Ashes" began as a portrait study that was unexpectedly painted over in gold by a mischievous vandal after it was left in the studio overnight. The portrait was completed on another canvas, and I was left with the gold canvas. Inspired by the Japanese gold leaf screens in my grandmother's home, as well as the tropical flowers she adored, I breathed new life into the canvas with a protea portrait. These ancient flowers survive wildfires and regrow, symbolizing rising from the ashes.
