Haleiwa Beach on Oahu's North Shore, just a block from the hubbub of folks exploring old Haleiwa Town, is far more tranquil. It is a retreat for locals, surfers, and canoe paddlers from the hustle of town. The members of the Haleiwa Canoe Club maintain an active training and regatta site at this beach. Like the soaring frigate birds, watching over it all is Mount Ka'ala in the Waianae range. It is the highest mountain on Oahu, over 4,000 feet. Ka'ala roughly translates as "fragrant mountain."
